The Silver Register is now surprisingly in its 9th year. In that time many of the boats on the register have changed hands and one Silver - the 40 foot Silver Leaf Hopalong built in 1933 - is now on her third owner since the Silver Register started.
The locations of the Silvers now registered vary widely. One Silver is in the Bahamas, and they stretch through Ireland, Scotland, all round the coast of England, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Majorca, Italy, Corfu, and Greece.
What are the advantages of being on the Silver Register? Well, there are many. The register is stored on a computer database where all known information about the boat can be easily accessed. Information about the boats is continuingly being added. Such information might come from Lloyds Register of Yachts - such as the years that the boat had a new engine fitted.
A record is being kept of past owners of many of the Silvers on the register which will assist future owners to trace their history. As information about the war service records comes in, it is added to the database. A recent addition to the database was identifying all the Silvers that were in the Clyde Small Boat Pool, and those that were involved in Clyde River Patrol duties during World War II.
There were articles written about many individual Silvers in 'The Motor Boat' magazine (now 'The Motor Boat & Yachting'). Whenever a new article on a Silver is discovered in the magazine, a record of the year and page number is logged in the Silver Register Database. These articles from 'The Motor Boat' often have photographs, general arangement drawings and other information that is invaluable in the restoration of a boat to her original condition. Recently I was able to tell the new owner of 'Silver Cloud' that the boat originally had a creme interior with beige carpets. also the boat was in the Clyde Small Boat Pool in 1942.
One great advantage of being on the Silver Register is the advantage you will gain when you wish to sell her your boat. We continually have people calling to ask where they can buy a Silver. For this reason there is now a specialist yacht brokers dealing in Silvers and boats designed by their principle designer, John Bain.
