Silver NewsItems - 'Silvander' - 'June' - 'Griffin' 'Silvander' Backs Up Rover
The Rover Series yacht races, previously known as the 'Tarbert' Series will be held at the end of May and begining of June. The 54ft Brown Owl, 'Silvander', will be there in her home Scottish waters acting as a 'support' ship. Yacht crews will be welcomed aboard to have breakfast before setting off for the days racing. No doubt they will have supper too on board, and if the weather is good her aft sundeck should host a few lively parties! Owner (and SMYA Member) Chris Logan plans to run charter trips on the Crinan Canal, and also possibly trips to the Hebrides.
36ft Silverette 'June' To Take A Voyage Home To RosneathOwner Clive Quitmann faxed the SMYA from the Isle of Man. "In a few days time, possibly 15th May, Pauline and I are off to Scotland in 'June', and once we have picked up some friends from the S.E. either from the Isle of Whithorn or possibly Portpatrick, we are off up the Firth of Clyde through the Crinan and Caladonian canals to wet 'June's' bottom in the North sea before returning to the I.O.M. for the Traditional Boat Rally at Peel in June.I fully intend to take 'June' to see where she was built and I wonder if you have any information about what there is to see at Rosneath now that the yard is no more." Clive will be taking 'June' to Rhu Marina where he hopes meet the 36ft MK II Silverette 'Silver Gare' and her owner. 'June' last saw Rosneath in 1936 when she left Silvers after her launching on her maiden voyage bound for Whitby. This time round 'June' will be retracing her original voyage to the east coast. For her owner too, history will be retraced, as Clive was evacuated to the Whitby area during the war and remembers well the convoys of Naval vessels gathering in the local waters.
30 foot Silverette 'Griffin' Sunk But Not ForgottenNews has just reached the SMYA that the 30ft Silvette 'Griffin' sank after hitting a semi submerged object, whilst cruising on Loch Lomond; sometime toward the end of last year. It's not all bad news though! She was refloated with air bags in a salvage operation and has since had her damaged planking renewed. As far as we know she is now back in full commission. We shall give an update soon as we get any further details. |
