FIRST SUCCESSES

The first success Mr. Bain had as a designer came in 1927 when he won first prize in a designing competition organised by Yacht Sales and Charters for a 14 ton motor sailer, In 1932 and again in 1935 he took leading positions in designing competitions run by Yachting World, and in 1945 he scored a signal success with his design for "The pleasure Cruiser of Tomorrow."

It was in 1927 also that Mr. Bain evolved the lines of a 42 ft motor yacht which was named 'Brown Owl' and this style of yacht caught on to such an extent that 10 similar boats had to be built as well as 12 - 52 ft long and several others still larger in later years.

Mr. Bain's ideal for a motor yacht suitable for family cruising is one about 50 ft in length and easily handled without necessitating the employment of assistants and these have throughout the years been his most successful products. Silver craft have gone to clients as far away as India, Newfoundland, the Persian Gulf, Argentine, Borneo and East Africa. At home here on the Clyde Mr. Bain's yachts have consistently given a good account of themselves by winning many prizes. Notable among them was The Field Gold Trophy won by Mr. R.M. Whyte's 'Nonie' in 1934 and again by 'Maureen II' in 1938 - a double achievement which no other designer has yet equalled. Top
